Filmmaker Jim Sheridan, Daniel Day-Lewis’ creative partner in the films “My Left Foot”, “In the Name of the Father” and “The Boxer”, said in an interview with ScreenDaily that his friend remains committed to his retirement from acting.
“He says he’s not coming back. I always talk to him,” Sheridan commented. “Of course I would love to do something with him again. It would be amazing to see Daniel come back to the screen and do something because he’s so good.”
With that, the director also revealed that Day-Lewis was unable to adapt to the era of streaming in pop culture: “He’s like the rest of us: he opens the streaming platforms and sees that he has seven thousand options, but none of them are good. Movies have left the public domain and gone into the private domain – you have a remote control and you can stop whenever you want. It’s not the same experience.”
It is worth remembering that Day-Lewis, who won three Oscars (“My Left Foot”, “There Will Be Blood” and “Lincoln”), announced his retirement in 2017, a few months before the release of “Phantom Thread”.
