An image circulates on social media stating that the Hungarian-American philanthropist and billionaire, George Soros, would have been arrested in the United States. According to the publication’s caption, Soros was involved in a “fraud in the US elections” scheme.
This information is false. There is no record in the press, nationally or internationally, that George Soros was recently arrested. In the United States, the rumor started to circulate at the beginning of the week, after several websites and profiles on social networks published a false document to prove the information.
In the original version of the document, which was manipulated, the American court accused six Russian hackers of crimes such as conspiracy, electronic fraud and identity theft. Unlike information circulating on social media, the prosecution does not cite the US elections, and was made on October 15, 2020.
The document shared by the profiles and websites that disseminated the false information shows a change of pattern in the background. The entire document has white streaks and, only in part, exactly where Soros’ name appears, the streaks disappear. In the original version of the indictment, the pattern of the fund is uniform.
In Brazil, another rumor involving George Soros circulated on social networks. In September, a publication was shared stating that former President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), would have “delivered” the reserve Raposa Serra do Sol, to investor George Soros. This information is also false.
George Soros is a Hungarian-born American citizen and philanthropist. The investor is known for making billionaire donations to progressive and liberal causes, through the Open Society Foundations. For this reason, Soros is the target of conspiracy theories by far-right activists.
