President Donald Trump said he would accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections, even as projections indicated that Republicans would lose their majorities in both the Senate and the House. In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said he was “absolutely willing to accept these results” and expected to work with Democrats, adding that the parties would probably reach an agreement.

Trump also posted an image on social media of a cap bearing the word “veto.” On Monday, November 2, he had suggested he would use his veto power if Republicans lost control of Congress. “I think I’m going to become Mr. Veto,” he told the New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast. He said lawmakers would send him legislation, he would veto it, and after “a month or two” of vetoes, they might come to his side to negotiate a deal.

Early Wednesday, November 4, Trump attributed the election setback to his name not appearing on the ballots. “My name wasn’t on the ballot, and if it had been, we would have won in a landslide!” he wrote in a social media post. During the campaign, he repeatedly urged voters to vote as though he were on the ballot. At a campaign event on Monday, he said he was asking people to “pretend my name is on the ballot.”

Democrats had won 51 Senate seats, giving them a majority, according to the reported count. In the House, Democrats had 180 members elected, compared with 107 Republicans. The 2026 midterm election cycle includes contests for 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.
