Pastor Adam Hamilton won a U.S. Senate seat for Kansas, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the Senate since 1932. He defeated Republican Rep. Roger Marshall. The report said Democrats had flipped five seats so far and had 51 senators elected, giving them a majority in the chamber.
Kansas had not elected a Democratic senator in nearly a century. The state backed President Donald Trump by a 16-percentage-point margin in the 2024 election, according to the report.
The Senate seat will be Hamilton’s first elected public office. He is pastor of the country’s largest Methodist congregation and was registered as a Republican until early this year.
Midterm elections are an important measure of public opinion on the White House. Voters choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. The report said Republicans controlled both chambers at the time.
