James Talarico is projected to become the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988, according to the Associated Press. The result would be a landmark Democratic victory in a state traditionally considered a Republican stronghold.

Talarico, a state representative, had been viewed as an underdog within his own party and was little known across Texas when the campaign began. He faced Republican Ken Paxton, the state’s attorney general, a Trump ally who has been involved in multiple corruption scandals.

Texas saw another major result: Democrat Gina Hinojosa won the governor’s race, defeating Republican Greg Abbott, who was seeking a third term. Hinojosa is set to become the state’s first Latina governor.

The midterm elections are an important measure of support for the White House. Voters choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats. Both chambers are currently controlled by Trump’s Republican Party.
