Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s gubernatorial race on Nov. 3, defeating Republican businessman Rick Jackson, according to an Associated Press projection. Her victory makes her the first Black governor in U.S. history and the first woman to lead Georgia.
The result is notable in a state with a history shaped by slavery and racial segregation. Georgia was also the site of protests against racism in 2020 after the killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a young Black man.
Georgia is the birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent leaders of the U.S. civil rights movement.
The state has been considered a Republican stronghold since 1972. Bottoms is the first Democrat to win a Georgia gubernatorial election since 1998.
