When Disney bought Lucasfilm for US$4 billion in 2012, many were amazed at the amount invested in a brand like Star Wars that came from three extremely criticized films and some niche animations.
Now, 12 years later, the American government has revealed the company’s balance sheet, which shows that the investment has already yielded a return far above what was imagined.
As a result, Disney has already profited US$12 billion from Star Wars, including box office, licensing, products and services related to the brand created by George Lucas. The amount simply represents triple what was invested in 2012.
The four most profitable films in the franchise’s history were released during the Disney period. In first place is “The Force Awakens”, from 2015, which earned US$936 billion.
The debut feature of the new trilogy is followed by “The Last Jedi”, with US$620 million,” Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, with US$532 million and “The Rise of Skywalker”, with US$515 million.
It is also worth noting that exorbitant profits from Star Wars are not exactly new. George Lucas himself made a fortune in the 70s by licensing toys related to “A New Hope”, which was one of the biggest hits in American cinema at the time.
All series and films from the Star Wars franchise are available on Disney+, including the animation “The Bad Batch”, which is in its final season.
