Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said four oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The Guard said the vessels were attempting to cross a passage south of the strait that it considers prohibited. It also reported intercepting two other ships and shooting down a drone over the waterway.
The Guard said the four tankers had violated its rules and were destroyed after hitting naval mines. It said the vessels were still burning. The force did not identify the ships’ nationalities. As of the report, there was no information about possible deaths or injuries in the incidents.
Iran has imposed strict limits on vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the conflict in the Middle East. The waterway is a major route for global energy supplies: between 20% and 30% of the world’s oil and at least 20% of its liquefied natural gas pass through it.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that his government is seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis. He said, “No one will benefit from this war if fighting resumes.”
