Mike Johnson, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will resign from the post following the Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm elections, according to U.S. media reports. He has also decided not to seek election as minority leader.

Johnson is currently third in the line of succession to the presidency, after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

The Louisiana Republican became House speaker in October 2023. In this year’s elections, he won reelection to a sixth term in Congress. During the midterm campaign, Johnson had been optimistic about his party’s prospects.

Republicans lost their majorities in both the House and the Senate. Democrats won their largest number of seats since Barack Obama’s 2008 election, according to the report.

The midterm elections were held Tuesday, Nov. 3. Voters decided races for one-third of the Senate’s seats, all 435 House seats and the governorships of 36 states.
