A group of young cyclists attacked transgender women in the Palermo Woods in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and filmed the assault, according to reports. Videos show the attackers using sticks, stones, traffic cones and other objects against the victims as they tried to escape.
At least six people were injured, and one reportedly lost an ear, the Argentine newspaper La Nación reported. The footage, which was shared by people involved in the attack, was recorded near Los Ombúes and Andrés Bello avenues. The group had been riding bicycles in the area before the assault.
The City of Buenos Aires LGBT Ombudsman’s Office said it was preparing a criminal complaint against those involved. The office also confirmed that it was handling the case after receiving accounts from the victims.
The attack became public days before Buenos Aires’ Pride March, scheduled for November 7. The event has been a source of tension with the local government, which asked organizers to postpone it until November 21 because of the arrival of Pope Leo XIV.
The assault also follows the killings of two transgender women on August 13 in the provinces of Santa Fe and Córdoba. Those cases were cited in accounts of the attack in Palermo.
