The European Union is urging residents to assemble emergency kits with supplies to last up to 72 hours, citing the possibility of crises. The European Commission, the bloc’s main executive and political body, issued the guidance Tuesday, Nov. 3.
In a statement, the commission called on people in all 27 EU countries to prepare emergency backpacks with essential items. The list includes drinking water, nonperishable food, first-aid supplies, personal hygiene products, flashlights, radios and portable phone chargers.
The commission said the nonbinding guidance is intended to foster a culture of preparedness across Europe and help individuals and communities become better informed and equipped to anticipate and respond to crises.
The EU said the measure is meant to prepare the public for natural disasters, geopolitical crises and cyber threats.
