The Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach, Florida, killing nine people may have broken apart before hitting the ground, the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday, Nov. 2. The NTSB is investigating the circumstances of the crash, which occurred Sunday afternoon, Nov. 1.

Wreckage was scattered across an area extending about 1 kilometer from the crash site, striking nearby properties that included sports centers, businesses, and homes. The available information does not establish when or why the aircraft may have broken apart.

The jet was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it began descending at more than 6,000 meters per minute. According to the NTSB, it exceeded its maximum operating speed—a condition known in aviation as overspeed—before the crash.

All nine people aboard died. They included 20-year-old copilot Nathalia Gadelha, the pilot, a family of four that included two children, a nanny, and two friends. The investigation remains underway.
