More than 54 million Americans had cast ballots by Monday, November 2, ahead of Tuesday’s elections that will determine the makeup of the U.S. Congress. The University of Florida’s early-voting tracker counted 54.4 million votes by Monday morning: 30.1 million cast in person and 24.4 million submitted by mail.
The reported total already exceeds the 45.9 million early votes recorded by Election Day in 2022, according to the university’s data. Early-voting deadlines differ by state, and Florida, Texas, California and North Carolina had recorded the largest numbers of votes so far.
The midterm elections will put all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats up for election. Voters in some parts of the country will also choose governors and state lawmakers.
The vote comes as President Donald Trump faces political pressure over the cost of living, his administration’s economic policies, trade tariffs and the effects of the war against Iran. Trump has increased his participation in campaign rallies to support allied candidates. Republicans currently hold majorities in both chambers; the results will determine whether they keep that advantage or Democrats gain ground and more ability to block the president’s proposals.
