Trump says abortion rights should be decided by states, not federal law in the US

Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Monday (8) that he continues to believe that abortion laws should be decided by states in the US, and should not try to impose a federal ban on the practice if elected.

“My opinion is that now that we have abortion where everyone wants it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine it by vote or legislation or perhaps both. What they decide should be the law of the land, in this case the law of the state”, said Trump, in a video published on his social network.

Since the US Supreme Court, with a conservative majority, changed its understanding of abortion, granting states the power to prohibit its practice, the topic has gained relevance in discussions in North American society. The issue should be one of the protagonists of the next presidential elections, in November.

With this, Trump stated that he was responsible for the 2022 Supreme Court decision that ended the federal right to procedure, alluding to his choices of conservative judges.

Since launching his campaign in late 2022, Trump has consistently dodged the issue of abortion.

The Republican Party has struggled to articulate a message to counter the political fallout from the 2022 ruling that overturned the Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, which was made possible by Trump’s appointment of three conservative Supreme Court justices while president from 2017 to 2021.
