In defeat for Biden, Supreme Court authorizes Texas to learn immigrants who illegally cross the border

The United States Supreme Court ruled this Tuesday (19) that, for now, it will allow the state of Texas to arrest people suspected of having crossed the border between Mexico and the US illegally.

As a result, President Joe Biden’s government had asked the Supreme Court for the Texas law to be suspended until the Supreme Court judges make a final decision on the matter.

The American government’s argument is that the law violates the country’s Constitution and also federal laws because it is not up to the states to create laws on this topic — it would, therefore, be interference.

The law was signed into law in December 2023 by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The text allows state authorities to arrest people who enter the United States illegally – in other words, it gives Texas agents a power that would only belong to the federal government.

The Texas governor stated that a state law was needed because the Biden administration was deliberately failing to act and that his state would need to “defend itself.”

Furthermore, members of the Republican Party have used the volume of immigrants entering the US to criticize the government of Joe Biden, who is from the Democratic Party.

Abbot is an ally of Trump, the Republican Party’s candidate for the American elections — which take place in November. Anti-immigration speech is one of Trump’s main banners.
