Judge postpones Trump trial over payments to adult films actress for 30 days

A judge has postponed the criminal trial of former US President Donald Trump by 30 days in the case stemming from payments he made to a former porn star. The trial was scheduled to begin on March 25.

Thus, the argument for requesting the postponement of the trial was that Trump’s defense would have been harmed by the late disclosure of evidence. The Stormy Daniels case made Trump the first former president of the United States to face a criminal trial. (Read more about the case below).

Trump faces four criminal charges. His tactic has been to try to postpone all trials so that they can take place after the presidential elections on November 5th. The postponement this Friday (15), granted by judge Juan Merchan, represents another victory for the former president.

It is worth remembering that the former president is accused of falsifying business records from his company Trump Organization to hide US$130,000 (R$430,000 at the time) paid to Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, shortly before the 2016 presidential elections.

According to the accusation, she had to remain silent about an alleged sexual relationship with the tycoon in 2006, when he was already married to Melania Trump.

The businessman denies having had any extramarital relationship with the actress.

The payment itself is not illegal, the problem, according to the Public Ministry, is that Trump hid this payment as if it were part of his lawyer’s fees at the time.

Additionally, New York prosecutor Alvin Bragg charges him with 34 counts of accounting fraud, which could be punished by up to four years in prison if found guilty.
