Madame Web, Sony Pictures’ new film in the Spider-Man universe, suffered from specialized criticism, empty theaters and all kinds of memes on the internet.
Therefore, in an interview with Bustle, Dakota Johnson spoke about what it was like reading the articles about the film and a little about her thoughts regarding the type of production that big blockbusters require.
“Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that it happened the way it did,” said the actress about the bad reviews. For her, there is a big reason behind the film’s failure. “It’s not cool to be part of something trashed, but it’s not something I can say I don’t understand.”
Johnson expressed concern about the future of films, as many are based on studio decisions and not the artists involved. “It’s so hard to make movies. And this is starting to happen even to little kids, which is what really scares me, decisions are made by committees, and art doesn’t do well when it’s done by committee. Movies are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around him,” said.
“You can’t make art based on numbers and algorithms. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullshit. Even if movies start to be made with AI, humans won’t want to see them.”
Furthermore, the actress also said that she will probably never make a film like Madame Teia again. “Sometimes in this industry you sign something, and it’s one thing, and as you do it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, wait, what?” Johnson said.
