A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore near Japan’s Kanto region at 7:39 p.m. local time Friday, Nov. 6, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The shallow quake was felt in parts of Miyagi, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures. Authorities reported no injuries or structural damage.

Officials said the quake could cause minor fluctuations in sea levels along Japan’s coast but ruled out the risk of damage. No tsunami warning was issued.

The tremor followed a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in August that struck the Tokyo area and eastern Kanto. Its epicenter was in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 70 kilometers. Local authorities ruled out a tsunami threat to coastal areas.

At least 37 people were injured across five prefectures in the August quake, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency: 15 in Tokyo, nine in Saitama, eight in Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki. Shaking lasted as long as a minute in some locations. An automated early-warning system sent alerts to residents’ mobile phones, giving them seconds to seek shelter before the shaking began.
