Paraguayan President Santiago Peña announced Thursday, Nov. 5, that he had decided to resign as an impeachment effort against him advanced in Congress. After the announcement, opposition figures questioned whether Peña had fled to Argentina. His resignation still requires congressional approval, and he is expected to submit it formally to the legislature.

A Peña ally in the government of Argentine President Javier Milei denied that the Paraguayan leader was in Argentina, according to the newspaper La Nación. Officials at the Casa Rosada, Argentina’s presidential office, told the newspaper: “We have no record of him having been in Argentina.”

Peña’s decision came amid a political and banking crisis in Paraguay that culminated in the dissolution of Banco Ueno, the country’s largest digital bank. The report did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the bank’s dissolution.

Despite Peña’s announced intention to resign, Paraguay’s Chamber of Deputies approved the opening of impeachment proceedings against him on Thursday. The process now moves to the Senate. Congress must also decide whether to accept Peña’s resignation after he formally presents it to the legislature.
