Indian police found three drums containing millions of rupees buried beneath the porch of a modest home in Baraipur Ramnagar, a village in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Two brothers, Rakesh Yadav and Rajesh Yadav, were detained for questioning, and the property was sealed.

Residents said the brothers abruptly left their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic and returned to the village. Afterward, neighbors noticed a dramatic change in their lifestyle: the brothers began buying land, homes, and businesses in the area, drawing attention from the community.

The cash was made up of thousands of bundles of 500-rupee notes. Police began investigating after receiving an anonymous tip alleging the money had not been declared and was therefore illegal. The allegation has not been established.

According to NDTV India, an initial search of the house found nothing unusual. Police later examined the floor of one room after receiving what the report described as precise information. The soil appeared recently disturbed, so workers were called in to dig. They uncovered the three buried drums.

Local media reported that the Income Tax Department, authorities responsible for the Goods and Services Tax, and intelligence agencies were contacted to investigate the money’s origin and whether it was legally held.
