A Paraguayan court ordered former President Santiago Peña held in pretrial detention on Saturday, Nov. 7. The decision followed an impeachment process approved by Congress the previous day.
Peña is accused of fraud in the allocation of public funds and of interfering with oversight of Ueno Bank. The allegations have not been established as fact.
The court granted a request filed Saturday by Paraguay’s Public Ministry. Prosecutors also charged former Central Bank President Carlos Carvallo and asked that both men remain in custody.
Peña was arrested Friday evening and was initially under house arrest after Congress completed the impeachment process. The proceedings took place amid a banking crisis linked to the failure of Ueno Bank, described in the report as Paraguay’s largest digital bank.
