Former President Barack Obama praised Democrats’ performance in the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, saying voters had sent a clear signal that they want change. Projections indicated that Democrats would win majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, a setback for President Donald Trump. Obama said voters were looking for a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, along with leaders offering practical answers to the challenges they face.

Obama credited the projected results to strong candidates who ran across the country, including in areas previously seen as difficult for Democrats to win. He said the candidates came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political views, but shared a commitment to public service and to putting the people of their districts and states first.

He also thanked election officials and volunteers from both parties for helping ensure a smooth vote, describing their work as an essential part of democracy. Obama noted that the Trump administration still has two years remaining, but said elected Democrats should begin working immediately to make changes where they have the power, prevent further harm and prepare for the future.

As of early Wednesday, Nov. 4, projections showed Democrats with 53 Senate seats and Republicans with 42. In the House, which was entirely up for election, Democrats were projected to hold 220 seats to Republicans’ 128. The figures were projections, not final results.

The midterms took place as Trump’s administration faced declining approval ratings. The source attributed the decline to the prolonged war with Iran and rising costs of living. In the 2026 midterm cycle, 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships and all 435 seats in the House were contested.
