The Democratic Party, in opposition to President Donald Trump, won 22 of the 36 gubernatorial contests held in the United States on Nov. 3, while Republicans won 12. Results in Alaska and Kansas were still pending. The party’s gains would leave Democrats governing 28 states and Republicans governing 20, according to the reported tally.
The midterm elections also included contests for one-third of the U.S. Senate and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives. The election took place as Trump’s approval was declining amid the prolonged war with Iran and rising living costs in the United States. The reported results showed Democratic gains in the Senate, the House and state governorships.
Democrats flipped five states previously led by Republicans: Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms won and was described as set to become the first Black woman to govern a U.S. state. In Nevada, Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford was elected governor, ending Republican control there and becoming the state’s first Black governor. Rob Sand won in Iowa, Amy Acton in Ohio, and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, where her victory broke a run of Republican governors.
The reported Democratic governor count includes Arizona, California, North Carolina, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Nevada, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. The source’s tally includes Kansas among Democratic-governed states even though its gubernatorial result was still being counted, with a Democratic candidate leading.
Republicans were listed as governing Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. Fourteen states did not hold gubernatorial elections that week; eight of those were governed by Republicans and six by Democrats.
Among the other results reported, Sarah Huckabee Sanders won reelection in Arkansas, and Brad Little won a third consecutive term in Idaho. Democratic incumbents Ned Lamont, J.B. Pritzker, Josh Green, Wes Moore, Maura Healey, Tina Kotek and Josh Shapiro also won reelection. Republicans Kelly Ayotte and Phil Scott were reelected in New Hampshire and Vermont, respectively. The results in Alaska and Kansas remained unresolved, and Democratic candidates were leading in both states.
