Study says millennials and generation z want original content, not remakes

Date:

We are in the age of endless remakes, reboots and sequels, but not everyone is interested in that.

A study released by IndieWire revealed that young people and adults from the Z and Millennial generations don’t want to know anything other than original content.

Therefore, according to the survey, 70% of millennials and generation z prefer to watch original films and series instead of franchise chapters, sequels and remakes.

The message couldn’t be clearer: they can’t stand the same stories and characters being repeated and reintroduced year after year.

With that, it is interesting to note the effect of this on cinemas, for example. The two most successful films in 2023 were “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”, which despite being multimillion-dollar projects from major studios, are neither sequels nor part of shared universes.

Another curious fact highlighted by the research is the impact on this public’s relationship with nostalgia.

There is no longer any interest in derivative series; Instead, millennials and Gen Z go straight to the source and rewatch whatever makes them nostalgic, like “The Office” and “Friends”.
