10 curiosities of the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip

Date:

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip complete 73 years of marriage this Friday (20). In the British crown, they are the couple with the longest union to date, just as there are no other monarchs in the world with such a lasting marriage.

The wedding took place on November 20, 1947, at Westminster Abbey in London. Third cousins, because they were Queen Victoria’s great-great-grandchildren, they met when Elizabeth was 13 and Phillip 18. By letters, the couple corresponded for eight years until Elizabeth turned 21 – the wait until that age was a request from the King George VI – and was then able to marry then Navy Lieutenant Phillip of Mountbatten, who had to renounce his Greek citizenship.

To mark the occasion, the official portal of British royalty separated some curiosities of the union, from the engagement to the diamond wedding. Check out 20 of them in the photo gallery above.
